Easy 3D Flex is an inorganic filling compound, which comes as a white powder. By mixing it with Powertex, you can create thick, coarse textures and even achieve 3D effects in paintings or on sculptures. Different effects and textures result from adding different quantities of the powder to Powertex liquid.

Mix 3D Flex powder and Powertex with a scraper or palette knife and then apply to it to sculptures, canvas, gourds or other surface with the scraper, a brush or by hand.

By adding  more 3D Flex powder you can create a thick sculpting clay that air dries to a rock hard surface.

If the paste is applied to the surface in thick layers, it will develop beautiful cracks and fissures that can be tinted with Bister, paint washes, inks or dyes.

Different crackling effects can be achieved by drying projects in a warm sunny area. If you are located in a cool weather area it will crack best if placed in a warm room or near a heat vent with circulating warm air. Bister can be sprayed on the surface of the Easy 3D mixture and gently heated with a heat gun to create pigmented effects. Do be careful not to scorch the surface if you are using a heat gun with the Bister patina. Accelerated drying with a heat gun is not recommended to cure the 3D Flex clay itself, it works best if allowed to cure and fissure on its own.

Layering the clay is possible. By creating cuts in the clay layer with a butter knife or other object, you can encourage more fissuring in that area as it dries. Experiment with layering different colors next to each other, you may be surprised at the results!

If a smoother surface is desired, apply 3D Flex in thin layers and allow complete drying between the layers. Adding a small amount of fine, white sand will reduce cracking and give additional texture. Experiment with adding other material to the mix and see what happens!

Create amazing designs and detailed imprints by spreading a thick layer of sculpting paste and then embossing images into the surface with lace, rope, screws, buttons, stencils, stamps . . .  what else is in your studio? If the surface is embossed it will not crack as deeply but it will hold the imprint beautifully.

Easy 3D Flex can be used to thicken acrylic paints to achieve more 3D effects in paintings and other mixed media. 3D Flex gives the artist a way to explore three dimensional work without a kiln and  the other tools needed for work in ceramics.

This product us natural and non-toxic, but it can dry out the skin. We recommend wearing gloves or using hand cream when working with the mixtures.

USING EASY 3D FLEX:

RUNNY MIXTURE

A runny mix will not crack.

It can be squeezed from a bottle to create hand writing, lines and dots.

It can be layered to create smooth designs without cracks.

THICK SPATULA/CLAY MIXTURE

Spread in different directions with palette knife or hands, then dampen the surface with water or Bister. Dry in direct sunlight or with a hair dryer.

ELEPHANT SKIN EFFECT

Apply a thick spatula mix of 3D Flex to surface. Sprinkle dry 3D powder onto the surface. Gently press the powder into the surface and push it in one direction. Let the paste dry.

SCULPTING PASTE

50% Easy 3D Flex powder to 50% Powertex liquid

Mix with a spatula, not with your hand, to ensure even mixture of the powder into the liquid. Mix until it will not stick to your finger when touched. The dryer the clay and the thicker the layer, the more cracks will appear. Temperature effects the drying time.

Less cracks can be achieved with a runny mixture spread with a spatula. A very smooth surface can be created by wetting the fingers with water and smoothing the surface.

ELECTRIC EFFECTS

Crumple a piece of plastic and press it into the surface of the paste. Once the plastic is peeled away, interesting effects will be left on the surface.

TEXTURE TECHNIQUES IN DEPTH AND HEIGTH

Press lace, stencils, bolts, buttons, screws, rubber stamps and whatever else into the clay to add texture.

MARBLING

Once a clay has been formed with the paste, lay different colored ropes of clay next to each other and then press together. Roll the ropes together, fold in half and roll again. Repeat until you get the desired effect.

OTHER TIPS

Always base coat your statue or sculpture with Powertex liquid. Think about the color of the base coat as it will likely show through in places that crackle. Choose a color that will compliment the cracks.

Let the piece dry a few hours before applying inks or washes to prevent the clay from crumbling. The clay can absorb the moisture from the patinas. If a piece does break away, it can be reattached with liquid Powertex and disguised with some stockinette or power cotton.

If you need to take a break, just cover the piece with plastic and it will help prevent premature drying.
